Department of Art

From Catherine Jennings, Chair

The Department of Art at Eastern New Mexico University offers quality undergraduate programs from faculty who help students develop conceptual and technical capabilities that empower them to function as professionals in a rapidly changing world. The curriculum stresses learning and thinking skills leading to personal and educational growth with the belief that art and design are guided as much by the intellect as by the hand.

Our faculty consists of seven full-time and three part-time faculty members, each of whom is nationally recognized for quality artistic creativity. In our studio courses, small class sizes allow for strong student-teacher interaction that in turn creates an excellent educational experience. Although our students continue to major in interdisciplinary studio art and graphic design, in 2006 we expanded our offerings to include a new BFA degree in Animation, Media Arts and Design, and the Department of Art collaborated in the creation of a new program in Digital Cinema Arts. As we evolve and transform to meet the 21st century, our curriculum continues to focus upon developing each student’s technical and conceptual skills, and to stress the importance of critical thought and formal concerns in both traditional studio and new electronic-based media.

The department's year-round changing exhibitions in Golden Library's Runnels Gallery provide cultural opportunities for area citizens and University faculty, staff, and students.
